A post about boobs, real and fictional

Candace demands an explanation for this
I was browsing When Fangirls Attack a few days back because I enjoy the shouting when I came across the following link: Kirsten Dunst's Breasts Were an Issue with "Spiderman 3."  They had me at "Kirsten Dunst's Breasts."

When they made Spiderman 3 they decided that Kirsten needed bigger boobs and asked her to wear a padded bra which she agreed to without complaint.  On one hand I'm glad that she's confident and savvy enough to agree to such a request as she knows the audience which is being targeted (13 year old boys and fanboys who are 13 mentally) and knows that with or without the padding she is gorgeous.  One could make the opposite argument, that's she's a total doormat and would do whatever the studio says just because they asked, but I'd rather not go there.  At least not in this space.

On the other hand, what the hell is wrong with people?

Do those look they they need extra help?

How about those?

I realize that Spiderman 3 is based on a comic book and that in the comic book tradition artists use their liscense draw figures that are often exagerated (hyper-muscular men.  Women would would break in half if they were real).  I have little problem with that.

This is one of my favorite covers of all time.

This is one of my favorite single pages.

I enjoy boobs.  That said, why not leave well enough alone?  In Kirsten Dunst we have a real woman who looks great.  What's the point of adding a cup size to her?  Did focus groups for the movie say "We want more boobs?"  Who are these people that can look at the first two pictures and not be satisfied?  Who are these modern day Odysseuses (Odysseues?) never sastified by what they have?  They are to be pitied.

I was going to do a bit talking about the figurines created for Spiderman 3, but I'm running short on time.  In the first article they mention that Kirsten's boobs were boosted both in the movie and in the action figures created for it.  I was not expecting this.  Again, I have no problems with boobs or cheesecake, but that's just gratitious.  Of course to get into this fully I would have to go into how cheesecake only works if the woman isn't completely out of character (though that's not a hard and fast rule) and while MJ isn't on par with Power Girl or Wonder Woman in terms of power and confidence she isn't that the barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen level either.

Finally, I heard this and thought of you, Emily.

ETA: She's presenting like a mandrill!  I'm disappointed I didn't work that phase in during my first pass.  I blame the time crunch.  Stupid grad school responsibilities.
